March 2013: Mark Dixon- Acropodium

Artspace Liberti is proud to present its March exhibition, Acropodium, paintings by Mark Dixon.  This exhibition runs from March 1 – March 30, 2013. The reception for Mr. Dixon will be held on Friday, March 1, from 6:30-9:30PM.

Dixon’s paintings explore individual and group memory. His current body of work incorporates public monuments and their attempt to memorialize an event or person in the larger public consciousness.  Dixon embraces both the figurative elements of monuments as well as the modernist, minimal elements of post-World War II memorials. Translated into the medium of paint, this dialogue between the figurative and the minimal takes on a different set of questions related to painting in contemporary art practice.
“The goal of these kinds of public works is to provide a meditative space with little pictorial distraction, allowing viewers to project their own versions of the event onto the space and/or unto the sculptural objects present. These new strategies derived from a minimalistic aesthetic, have found a place in my paintings. By employing and recalling public historical works in this way my intention is to invite inquiry into the meaning and function of our monuments and memorials as well as reflect on the relationship between private and collective memory.”

Mark Dixon was born in Greensboro, NC and grew up in Northern Delaware.  He received a BFA in Painting from the University of Delaware in 2001 and an MFA in Studio Art from Maryland Institute College of Art in 2012. He currently teaches art at Lakeside School located in Horsham, PA and lives in Glenside, Pa.

Friday, February 1: Lynne Ghenov

Please join us on Friday, February 1 from 6:30-9:30PM for Lynne Ghenov's Multigenerational Live/Work Program.

Artspace Liberti is proud to present its January/February exhibition, Multigenerational Live/Work Program, works on paper by Lynne Ghenov.  This exhibition runs from January 18 – February 24, 2013. The reception for Ms. Ghenov will be held on Friday, February 1, from 6:30-9:30PM.

Ghenov's focus has been primarily in site specific installation and sculpture, interested in the materiality of light, fabric, found domestic stationery and immersing the viewer in recreated templates of her own memory.
For the past four years her work has been collage, drawings and a repurposed printmaking practice via the usage of a Xerox printer as a tool of choice. The printer has not only become an object of living and working experience, it has grown iconic in her practice.
Ghenov currently lives in the house she grew up in, which she left at the age of 17. The room which currently houses her studio has passed through assorted incarnations during her life, all of which hold specific memories that concoct new experiences and obfuscate recollections, drawing a melange of old and new; felt and unexplained.

Lynne Ghenov graduated from Tyler School of Art receiving a BFA in sculpture in 1998. She studied in Rome, Italy in 1996. She currently lives and works in Medford, NJ.

Friday, November 2: Matthew Sepielli- Cathedral

Artspace Liberti is proud to present its November/December exhibition, Cathedral, a painting and video installation by Matthew Sepielli.  This exhibition runs from November 2 – December 30, 2012. The reception for Mr. Sepielli will be held on Friday, November 2, from 6:30-9:30PM.

Conceived as a singular statement, this exhibition will feature two separate elements: a suite of carved-plaster-on-linen paintings installed on the Artspace wall as well as a short film on view during the exhibition’s opening reception.

Cathedral draws its inspiration from many different sources.  Part of this inspiration is drawn from memories and experiences that have left a sensory stamp on the artist. A quiet church in the evening, a winter’s sunset and memories of walking in the woods late at night are all moments that are a part of its creation.
Beyond direct experience, two different writers and their works have played an enormous role in the conception of the exhibit: Raymond Carver and his short story, “Cathedral” and Jun’ichirō Tanizaki and his essay, “In Praise of Shadows”.

Cathedral was originally installed at Tiger Strikes Asteroid. This Artspace installation will allow Sepielli to install this piece in an unbroken linear format instead of circling the walls of the TSA gallery space. It also allows for the piece to be experienced in a space designated for worship.

Matthew Sepielli is an artist living in Philadelphia and a member of Tiger Strikes Asteroid. He has also exhibited at the Crane Arts Center, Samson Projects in Boston, MA, The Cheltenham Center for the Arts and was also included in a previous group show at Artspace Liberti.

Sarah Roche: Of The Sea- Friday, September 7

Artspace Liberti is proud to present its September/October exhibition, Of The Sea, paintings by Sarah Roche. This exhibition runs from September 7 – October 21, 2012. The reception for Ms. Roche will be held on Friday, September 7, from 6:30-9:30PM.

The paintings on view consist of both plein air and studio works using the ocean as their subject.   The sea has long served as inspiration for artists ranging from Casper Friedrich to Anselm Kiefer to Walt Whitman.  Roche’s works observe the shifting elements of ocean, sky and sand.  As Roche states, “The resulting work is a bid for reckoning with nature’s cyclical patterns, repetition and endless variety through flowing washes and drips. The paintings are a direct observational response to nature as well as something more subjective. The sea presents a singular expanse that sweeps the mind clean.  Painting fast and loose as the light changes is an exhilarating race to a possible object of contemplation.”

Sarah Roche lives and works in Philadelphia, PA.  She holds an MFA in Painting and Printmaking from the University of Pennsylvania.   Ms. Roche has both curated exhibitions and exhibited her own work in Philadelphia and the greater Mid-Atlantic region at such institutions as the Woodmere Art Museum, the University of the Arts, Seraphin Gallery and Cerulean Art.
