Liberti is proud to present its September/October exhibition, Of The Sea,
paintings by Sarah Roche. This exhibition runs from September 7 – October 21,
2012. The reception for Ms. Roche will be held on Friday, September 7,
from 6:30-9:30PM.
The
paintings on view consist of both plein air and studio works using the ocean as
their subject. The sea has long served
as inspiration for artists ranging from Casper Friedrich to Anselm Kiefer to
Walt Whitman. Roche’s works observe the
shifting elements of ocean, sky and sand.
As Roche states, “The resulting work is a bid for reckoning with
nature’s cyclical patterns, repetition and endless variety through flowing
washes and drips. The paintings are a direct observational response to nature
as well as something more subjective. The sea presents a singular expanse that
sweeps the mind clean. Painting fast and
loose as the light changes is an exhilarating race to a possible object of
contemplation.”
Sarah
Roche lives and works in Philadelphia, PA. She holds an MFA in Painting
and Printmaking from the University of Pennsylvania. Ms. Roche has
both curated exhibitions and exhibited her own work in Philadelphia and the
greater Mid-Atlantic region at such institutions as the Woodmere Art Museum,
the University of the Arts, Seraphin Gallery and Cerulean Art.
